Why Do We Have Joints?

Joints may be damaged and need replacement for many reasons:

  • Arthritis will damage joints over time by decreasing the natural lubricant needed to keep joints moving freely (often referred to as Range of Motion) which in turn can increase pain to the joint and may affect mobility (the ability to move from one location to another).
  • Damaged joints can come from overuse of a particular joint.
  • The aging process also damages joints by a natural decrease in the amount of lubrication needed to maintain proper range of motion, mobility and functions of daily living. This happens due to muscle degeneration or weakening of the muscles.
